Description
Attractive large antique Victorian Arts & Crafts oak mirror back hall coat stand.
A lovely large Arts & Crafts carved oak hall stand. We date this hall stand to the second half of the 19th century.
The hall stand sits on rounded legs at the front and oblong section legs at the rear. The legs are braced with a base shelf housing two oblong metal drip trays.
The rear legs continue up to form the mirror back side supports. They are joined at the top by an oblong section cross rail fitted with an integral cornice with a decorative arch top cresting rail, which features an attractive central Arts & Crafts piercing.
There is a further oblong section cross rail above the storage section. The space between the cross rails houses a central arch top wood framed mirror. The mirror glass is thick and bevelled and is showing only very minor signs of foxing. There is a small shelf beneath the mirror.
Beneath the mirror section is a further Arts & Crafts pierced back panel, over a lidded storage box. The front of the box features an attractive relief-carved section, resembling an inverted heart. Although small, this carving has been completed to a high standard and is very smooth and pleasing to the eye.
The space between the drawer and cross rails provides housing for umbrellas, walking sticks etc.
There is a total of six very decorative Arts & Crafts double brass coat hooks to the back rails.
The hall coat stand has a height of 83" (211cm) a width of 40.5" (103cm) and a depth of 14" (36cm).
This lovely large Victorian Arts & Crafts carved oak hall stand remains in very good solid condition with only very minor surface markings commensurate with age and usage. The stand has been refinished at some point previously, and is showing some wear to the lidded box and base shelf. There is also a slight bow to the lid, and some minor indentations to the finish.
This remains a simple yet stylish large Victorian oak hall stand. It will continue to provide good service for many years to come.
